
How Long Does Laser Marking Last?
One of the biggest advantages of laser marking or engraving is its permanence, but what does "permanent" actually mean?
Can it survive years outdoors?
Can chemicals remove it?
Can you grind it off
Can somebody deliberately remove a serial number?
The answer depends on both the material and the laser marking process used.

What Do We Mean By "Permanent"?
One of the biggest misconceptions about laser marking and engraving is the word "permanent." Many people assume this means a laser mark can never be removed under any circumstances. In reality, that's not quite true.
A permanent laser mark is designed to remain legible throughout the normal working life of the component, resisting everyday exposure to sunlight, moisture, cleaning chemicals, oils, abrasion, heat and cold, and general wear. Unlike printed labels, ink or stickers, laser marking doesn't rely on adhesives or surface coatings that can peel, fade or wear away. Instead, the laser changes the surface of the material itself. Depending on the process used, it may create a colour change, remove a coating or physically engrave into the surface of the component.
How Long Will Laser Marking Last?
The honest answer is... it depends. Not because laser marking is unpredictable, but because several factors influence how well a mark performs over time. The good news is that by choosing the right material and the correct laser marking process, a mark can remain clear and legible for the entire working life of the component. Three things have the biggest influence on durability:
🛠️ The Material
The material being marked is one of the biggest influences on longevity.
Stainless steel, anodised aluminium, brass and engineering plastics all react differently to a laser. Some materials allow deep, permanent engravings, while others create a surface colour change or rely on the properties of a protective coating. Choosing the correct material is often just as important as choosing the correct laser marking process.
⚡The Laser Marking Process
Not all laser marks are created in the same way. A deep laser engraving physically removes material to create a permanent recess, while laser annealing changes the colour of the surface without significantly altering its profile. Laser foaming modifies the structure of certain plastics, and laser ablation removes coatings to reveal the material beneath. Each process has strengths and limitations, which is why selecting the right one for the application is so important.
🌍 The Environment
Where the component spends its life can dramatically affect how long the marking remains legible. A machine data plate fitted inside a clean factory experiences very different conditions to one installed on offshore equipment or food processing machinery. Factors such as UV exposure, moisture, salt spray, chemicals, cleaning routines, heat and abrasion all need to be considered before deciding on the most appropriate marking method.
So... How Long Will It Actually Last?
In the real world, laser marking has earned its reputation because it simply lasts. Whether it's a serial number on a hydraulic manifold, a stainless steel data plate exposed to the elements or a QR Code helping engineers access maintenance records, laser marking is designed to remain clear and legible throughout the normal working life of the product. Here's what you can typically expect.
🏭 Indoor Environments
In most industrial settings, a correctly applied laser mark should remain perfectly legible for decades. It's common for us to see machinery still carrying clear laser-marked identification many years after installation.
☀️ Outdoor Use
UV light has virtually no effect on a laser mark because there are no inks or pigments to fade. Rain, snow and sunlight are rarely the limiting factor, the material itself will usually age before the laser marking does.
🧪 Chemicals
Laser marks on metals can withstand years of exposure to oils, coolants and many industrial cleaning products. Some plastics can be more susceptible depending on the material and the chemicals involved, which is why selecting the correct material is so important.
🌊 Marine Environments
Laser marking is widely used on stainless steel for offshore, marine and food processing applications. Choose the correct grade of stainless steel and the appropriate marking process, and the identification should comfortably last for the service life of the component.
🔥 Heat
Laser marking doesn't melt off or evaporate under normal industrial operating temperatures. It's commonly found on components used in engine bays, ovens and manufacturing equipment without any issues.
If your component is glowing orange... you've probably got bigger problems than whether you can still read the serial number.
⚙️ Abrasion & Wear
This depends largely on the marking process. A deep engraved mark can remain legible even after years of wear because the information is physically cut into the material. Surface marks, such as laser annealing, are naturally more vulnerable to heavy abrasion but still provide excellent durability under normal operating conditions.
🧽 Cleaning
Soap, water, IPA, acetone and most common workshop cleaning products won't simply wipe away a laser mark. If your cleaning routine is removing the identification, there's a good chance it's removing the surface of the component as well.
🔨 Deliberate Removal
Yes... laser marking can usually be removed. The catch is that you're rarely just removing the marking. In most cases you'll need to sand, machine or grind away part of the component itself before the identification disappears.
It's a bit like saying you can remove the paint from your car with an angle grinder. Technically you're right, but you probably won't be happy with the result.
The Javo Test: If you're trying hard enough to remove a laser mark that you've reached for a flap disc, belt linisher or milling machine... congratulations, you've just proved why it's considered permanent.
